What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pumps work in the same manner as fridge and freezer’s do, only in reverse. They use the air from outside to provide heat and hot water to your home.

As the air is drawn in through the external heat pump unit, it warms a liquid (a refrigerant) which as it warms turns to gas. The temperature is increased as the warmth is compressed, which then provides heat for you via your radiators. Then once the gas has transferred its heat it cools again and becomes a liquid once again.

They can work to temperatures as low as -15c

Air Source Heat Pumps do require more space than a Condensing Boiler.

It’s advised that your home is well insulated, to allow the Air Source Heat Pump to provide maximum efficiency.

Solar Panels are recommended to be fitted with an Air Source Heat Pump to assist in reducing your bills further. If your electric is ZERO carbon this will allow you to heat your home without emitting any Carbon Emissions at all.

Air Source Heat Pumps are powered by electric only so a good option if you do not have gas available. They are more expensive to run than a Ground Source Heat Pump, but they are easier to install and less expensive than a Ground Source Heat Pump.

Air Source Heat Pumps are 350% energy efficient to draw a comparison an A rated gas condensing boiler is 90%+ energy efficient.

Coins in a small glass container with a plant growing out of it.

This means lower emissions and a lower energy bill.

Air Source Heat Pumps are more expensive than a Gas Condensing Boiler to buy, but the good news is we have funding under EC04, so these measures are completely free for you!

Low carbon and part of the drive to get to Net Zero by 2050 and reduce fossil fuel consumption

An Air Source Heat Pump is noisy, they do have a fan but if installed correctly and in the right position, they emit 50-60 decibels. If it is noisy, it can be a sign there is something wrong with the Unit.

Air Source Heat Pumps are expensive to run, they produce 3.5kw for every 1kw of electric that they use. If you have Solar Panels then you are in a Win: Win situation as the sunshine is free!

Air Source Heat Pumps last for approx. 20 years as long as they are maintained on an annual basis.

They are expensive, they are but we have funding under EC04 to get you one for Free!
An Air Source Heat Pump needs a lot of outside space, they actually need much less space than a ground source heat pump.
They are unsightly, our surveyor will work with you to find the most unobtrusive but effective location, plus a small fence may help conceal it.

My home is too old and draughty. It’s true that insulation is needed but the vast majority of homes can be insulated to ensure the Air Source Heat Pump works as efficiently as possible. It’s recommended that there is loft insulation and cavity wall insulation, and double-glazed windows as a minimum. We have the funding to provide you with free insulation!

Underfloor heating is the only system Air Source Heat Pumps work with. Whilst underfloor heating does work well with Air Source Heat Pumps, they work well with radiators too.
