What are Solar Panels?

Solar Panels are also known as Photovoltaic (PV) Panels, they cleverly harness energy from the sun and convert it into electricity.

The individual cells on the solar panel absorb the energy from the sun, the cells are usually constructed from silicone, and the panel is covered by glass or polymer resin. The cells in the Solar Panels are semi-conducting and their electrons absorb photons which causes them to become energised. An electrical charge is the result which creates a DC (Direct Current) of electricity. The DC converts into an AC (Alternating Current) as it passes through an inverter. The electric in an AC form can then be used to power your home.

You can use then use the electricity generated in your home and any surplus can be sold back to the national grid. Alternatively, you can store the electric in batteries. Currently under ECO4 we have funding only for Solar Panels.

PV panels do not require bright sunshine to work and can still harness energy on a cloudy day (very useful in the UK!). But PV panels generate more electricity on brighter days.

Technology is changing and Solar Panels are becoming more and more efficient, which means the Solar Panels are becoming compact than ones that first entered the market.

Solar Panels are typically affixed to your roof and will be positioned so they capture the most sunlight, this is in a south facing direction. If your home has a flat roof Solar Panels can still be installed although will be tilted to ensure they gain as much exposure to the sun and allow air to circulate.

If your roof is not suitable, we do also install solar panels are ground level if that is found to be more effective.

Your Surveyor will confirm at the time of survey where your Solar Panels will be most effectively positioned.

Solar Panels last for approximately 25 years when maintained correctly. You should ensure that they are cleaned at least 2-3 times per year to keep them free from dirt and operating at maximum efficiency. You should also be mindful of anything can cause a shadow or restrict sunlight. For example, if you have any trees nearby, it pays to keep the branches trimmed back to stop them from obstructing the flow of light.
